Is it possible to live completely waste free? In this multi-award winning, festival favourite, partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least garbage Their light-hearted competition is set against a darker examination of the problem waste.  Even as Grant and Jen start to garner interest in their project, they struggle to find meaning in their minuscule influence on the large-scale environmental impacts of our “throw-away society”. Described as An Inconvenient Truth meets Super Size Me, The Clean Bin Project features laugh out loud moments, stop motion animations, and unforgettable imagery. Captivating interviews with renowned artist, Chris Jordan and TED Lecturer Captain Charles Moore, make this film a fun and inspiring call to individual action that speaks to crowds of all ages.

Vancouver Screening Tonight (Nov 5th)!

We're pretty excited to be having our second Vancouver screening at the brand spanking new SFU Woodwards downtown.

Grant and I spent some quality time on the streets of Vancouver on Wed, handing out flyers, talking trash, and generally attracting attention with an awesome plastic bag costume we borrowed from the Surfrider Foundation - thanks guys!

Metro Vancouver (who has loved our project from the start since it coincides so perfectly with their Zero Waste Challenge) is graciously sponsoring the event. And Recycling Alternative is providing a mini recycling depot where people can drop off their batteries, unnumbered plastics, plastic bags, DVDs and CDs, and small electronics like cell phones for proper recycling!

We also have some sweet door prizes from Innate, Moukisac, and MEC that are geared towards helping you reduce your personal garbage and avoid crappy disposable items.

This will be our last Vancouver show for awhile, so we hope you tell your friends and come on out to SFU Woodward's downtown at 7pm tonight (Fri, Nov 5th). More info and tickets at http://www.stubmatic.com/cleanbinproject

The Perils of Plastic

Last weekend, we attended a heartfelt and powerful presentation by Jan Vozenilek about the growing problem with plastics in our oceans and its effect on Midway Island's albatross.

Although we have known about these issues for a couple years, we were still both overcome with emotion; seeing Jan's latest images from Midway made it feel as if we were hearing it for the first time. In addition to sharing short films and images, Jan brought a collection of plastic collected from inside the stomaches of dead baby birds. I was astounded by how many lighters and toothbrushes there were in the pile, and it really hit home that this plastic was our plastic: stuff that we all use everyday is killing marine wildlife.

To balance all that doom and gloom, Jan shared some positive stories such as the girl in Penticton who campaigned to get her highschool to give up plastic waterbottles (and achieved success in only one year!) and how the videos his team took on Midway have reached thousands of people around the globe. If you ever get a chance to see Jan speak, I highly recommend it, but in the meantime, please visit www.midwayjourney.com
